Marilyn Kohn RE/MAX realtor comments quoted in March News & Views
Marilyn Kohn realtor with REMAX Unlimited in Peoria Illinois gives her views on home downsizing
Marilyn Kohn, a Peoria area real estate agent with more than 25 years realty experience and with Seniors Real Estate Specialist credientials was interviewed for the March issue of the Newspaper News & Views. She was interviewed by Sandra Post in her article, "Preparing to Downsize". Marilyn commented that downsizing is particularly difficult for seniors since their "possessions regardless how modest or lavish, have emotional attachments for their owners". Marilyn goes on to say that it is not really the furniture that is important but the boxes of momentoes in the home that are so difficult to part with. In the article Marilyn discusses how she counsels with seniors within her listing process in which she lays out a plan of options to also downsize their possessions. Among these options are setting up time with their adult children to go through the memorabilia and decide what to keep or throw away. Another option is an estate sale conducted by professionals who also establish prices and sale arrangements. Most important is to determine the disposition of keepsakes before the move.
Moving to a new location no matter how beautiful is particularly difficult for seniors, but as Marilyn states, going through the memorabilia periodically with family members before the home sale greatly reduces the enormity of the task. It is much easier if it is an ongoing planned event than if it has to be accomplished at the last moment.
